Forest is a film that was made for projection onto the exterior of Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral which backs onto steep pine woods. The German town of Bad Ems, where it is located, was famous for its healing waters, once a magnet for 19th century artists, writers and musicians seeking cures, such as Caspar David Friedrich and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Coutts sourced films where the main action happens in woods. She then used this as a linking feature, a consistent backdrop within which scenes from over ten films intersect as protagonists seek their own means for survival and cure.
Forest was made with support from an international scholarship at Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.
